Assignment:
In fall 2007 I assigned a project to my Photoshop for Fashion Design Presentation class that culminated with a collection of designs based on a previously executed inspirational triptych. This triptych assignment went like this: 1. Pick an inspirational character; 2. Send that character to a place and time not contemporary to him or her; 3. Bring the character with his/her/or its new found inspiration to a contemporary place, thus completing the inspirational ideas and details to create the fashion designs from. In my example I chose Edie Beale from the 1970's documentary film Grey Gardens, sent her to the 1890's European fashion scene, and brought her back to a modern day Asian rain forest. I asked the students to illustrate the designs using all of the Photoshop skills and technique they had learned during the semester. The parameters were that they had to create 8 looks arranged in any creative way they liked and most importantly they could NOT draw and scan the illustrations into the computer, but rather had to collage them using various images and sources. Many of us experienced a rough start to this project but soon we temporarily abandoned our usual and comfortable illustration practices and were free to explore contemporary, new, and interesting illustration styles. What follows are my collage illustration samples for the class based on the triptych idea I described above.
